The Ensign App Reviews

A wonderful prequel

I have bested a dark room as well as the ensign, highly recommended an app with the difficulty of dark souls, as well as a similar mood, but delightfully simple and text based

Not for the easily discouraged

A well thought out prequel with stupidly difficult obstacles, was worth every second. After beating the game 100%, finally felt accomplished.

Tough but Rewarding

Its takes some time to get used to the difficulty of the game, but its a really fun adventure!

Meh

I wouldnt listen to any of the hyped up reviews, it is challenging though

As good as the predecessor

This game and its sequel are perfect. They totally were worth the small cost.

A fuc"ing masterpiece

In every way a true work of art. Best phone game Ive ever played.

Perfect

If perfection exists in this universe in glad to own it and play it and now right it a review the simple graphics are awesome the story amazing and it even beats the dark room (which Im happy to have bought regardless of the simple description and only one photo though that might have been why I did because it intrigued me and this did the same) its worth every penny it costs and I think everyone should play it atleast ounce in there life where gameplay meets art and story is where the ensign and the dark room lie

Wow

The amount of thought put into this was incredible; the way he tried to create several storylines intermixed within each other was great. I loved that he added moral-based decisions, the consequences of which really knew how to make you feel bad for taking food from an in-game character. Great work my friend

Fascinating way to tell a story

Superb storytelling that we need more of on the App Store

An incredible experience

First off, Ill try not to spoil any part of the story with this review, and I sincerely apologize if I do. The first part will be a review of the game, and the second will be my experience with it The Ensign is BY FAR one of my favorite games, on any system. The story is amazingly interesting, even after I know the whole of it, and the books are fascinating to me even though Ive read them all. The game has infinite replay ability, and I found, because of the text based style of the game, you can stop at any time except during battle to go do something, or just put it away for a little while. You dont need to keep playing like other games with graphics. This game is extremely hard, but once you learn how to play, its not too bad. Ive loved every part of this game, and dont regret buying it in the least So, what are you waiting for! Buy The Ensign! And if you havent, buy A Dark Room too, and play it first! But give this game a chance. Dont delete it after you die a few times. I will say you cannot complete the game until you die twice to a certain something, so dont be disheartened there. Although the game is VERY challenging, its 100% worth it to play it to the end P.S. - WATCH YOUR HYDRATION!!! Ive had a few stupid, face-palmy deaths because I didnt pay attention to how much water I had, including one refuse food run at 94% map completion, all areas cleared, where I was completely geared out, had everything set, and was just finishing up filling out the map. PLEASE dont do that to yourself! Here is my personal experience with the ensign, to give a little more insight to what the game might be like. I had loved playing A Dark Room, and after I had beaten it twice, I saw there was another game! I immediately bought it and started playing. I had read a review or two beforehand, so I knew it was going to be challenging, but I had no idea what was in store. I died. A lot. And then died some more. Back when I started playing, fist level carried over every time you played, so if you maxed it out, you were pretty much set. After beating the game, both accepting the food and refusing it, I left The Ensign alone for a while. Later on, I saw the game had an update, one that changed the way fist damage worked, along with other things. So I picked it back up. It shouldnt be to hard, right? Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope its hard. But now, looking back, I wouldnt have it any other way. I decided to throw myself right into the thick of things and refuse the food right off the bat. I died. A lot. But I still knew how to play the game, so I could get pretty far. IT IS POSSIBLE to beat it when you refuse food. Just very, very, VERY hard. So, with 100% completion, all yes-es on the final screen, I believe I know enough to make a review. The Ensign, is one of the best, if not the best games I have ever played. I love this game, and A Dark Room, completely. The stories are so well made, and the gameplay is amazing! If you havent played one or either of these games, I would very highly recommend it. Now to beat the hardest version of God mode

ยก5 STARS!!!!!

This game is GREAT, but DEATH awaits... I love this game so much I can not wait till the next one comes out. And just a note to people looking through the reviews wondering if they should get this game think about this: I played this on a iPhone 4 It doesnt take up a lot of space It doesnt need wifi It will definitely occupy your time well Have fun future players

Eyes up, Ensign

I want to start this review by saying that this is one of the most rewarding experiences Ive had in any videogame. This is the Dark Souls of IOS games, and its easily my favorite mobile game ever. The lore and narrative of the game is interesting, and the gameplay, especially the early defector mechanic, is both delightful and frustrating. If youre planning on purchasing this game, I urge you to stick with it, no matter how hard it may seem.

This game is like herding cats...

...except with a nice reward at the end. This prequel makes every part (hidden or not) of "A Dark Room" related to each other. The game is very hard but once you discover everything, the reward more than compensates for your pain. Maybe if fate allows, another game will be added to the series, though the author doesnt seem too keen on it. November 2015 Edit: The accuracy of the bolus is complete crap. Its literally unplayable if you cant stun some of these really powerful enemies. The alternative is finding the upgrades for your health, food, and water, but they are so far from the base camp that it takes a while to find.

Brutal In The Best Sense of the Word.

I would have to say that this game is brutal and almost impossible. You will die often, as much from your own carelessness as from the enemies you face. However, like many very difficult things its extraordinarily satisfying, so much so that when I "finished," the game (I dont know if thats even the right word) I actually went back and subjected myself to more brutal death just to "complete" two of the unfinished "tasks." (Id be clearer but I dont want to give too much away.) this game is not the brooding existential exercise of "A Dark Room," but is a more traditional RPG (although not traditional by the normal standards.) I highly recommend this game if you are up for.a challenge and dont mind some frustration mixed in with your triumph. Or should I say a lot of frustration. Tablet throwing level. I mean it. But buy the game anyway. Its great.

A Masterpiece of a Game

When I first played A Dark Room years ago, I had stumbled across the browser version and only put maybe an hour or so into it. Those of you who have played know this barely scratches the surface of the game, but even so, when I came across the app quite a long time after, I didnt hesitate to buy it. Ive replayed it an uncountable number of times. The Ensign provides just as enthralling and incredible of an experience. This game is brutal, dont get me wrong, but its brutality adds to the story in a way Ive never seen before. I found myself occasionally wanting to die so I could see how the game changed. Of course, there were also the times (much more frequent) where I found myself cursing and having to put the game down because Id died of my own carelessness. The frustration is entirely worth it. Stay with it. Start again, as much as you wont want to. I cant tell you the number of times this game made me pause and gave me chills. The Ensign, as well as the original A Dark Room, are exquisite games with unique, rich storytelling and gameplay. I cannot recommend them enough.

Hope

I had a really long and meaningful reply ready, but the username was taken and I couldnt get it back. So to keep it short, I recommend every single one of you play this game to the end. Refuse the food, complete the ritual, and achieve the impossible. Have hope.

nice

Despite the snarky blurb that told me to "leave a one star review to get that empty sense of vindication I seek", this game deserves more than that. I may have played this game 10 hours longer than I needed to, but it was worth it to see those mocking remarks after I got so far in the game and died. Fantastic game.

Words Cant Describe

I absolutely loved this game. It was pretty difficult at first, but I quickly realized how to properly play this game as opposed to A Dark Room. Thats the thing about this game though, it forces you to think and adapt as opposed to other games where you are just mindlessly tapping your screen. Another good quality about The Ensign is that it is difficult in more ways than one. I not going to say exactly why as to preserve this game for more people but its outstanding. I wish there were more things I could say, because I cant find the words to explain the awe I had while playing this game.

Brilliant

Absolutely brilliant is the creator. Everything he makes its just beautiful and extremely creative. Makes you think about life in a different way.

Best game I ever played

Awesome, this game tells a great story of the wanderers empire. Turns out your guy in a dark room is a multi armed alien and also your guy in this game is pretty evil considering the fact that he kills already starved human resistance. This game is totally worth it but some things ruin u sometimes right before u finish. First couple times u play just mess around and find all the effects of what u do. Everything in this game ties into a dark room this game you are still the same wanderer just before u go into a coma or something.
