Pros and cons of The Ensign app for iPhone and iPad

The Ensign app good for

Please make the battle stops when phone calls! Ive died after 40 minutes of playing because of incoming call!
I embarked quickly... I died quickly... I embarked again... I died again... Hours later... Thumbs sore... Tears falling... I won... Or did I?... May the fire burn brightly for you, and may it keep you warm...
This game, makes you think, and learn and if you dont quit ... Eventually win. I totally saw everything in my minds eye as I played. Thoroughly enjoyed every detail. The narration at end made me feel complete as game creator told of his inspiration and why what was what. Do yourself a favor and get the game. No its not a pretty picture but it makes you think and try . Looking forward to others .
I am such a big fan of interactive fiction / text-based games / whatever you want to call it and I love this game. The worst part is that there arent more!!! The only problem I had was that I got a phone call in the middle of the game and when the phone call was over, I had died. That sucked. Especially since you try to get so much done before you die.
I am so touched by these games, A Dark Room and The Ensign. Both wonderful masterpieces that you can tell have hours of work put into creating. The text-based and very minimalist feel are great. After playing ADR I got The Ensign and was equally impressed. While playing you feel connected to the discoveries and mystery of the storyline, it is hard to describe. I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking for something more in a game. These games are truly amazing and have a once in a long time experience to both of them. Thanks so much to the developers for a game like this.
I played A Dark Room and loved it and bought this one too... Let me tell you... It requires brain power to play this game... You have to have a strategy in order to keep going and I didnt get that at first so I wasnt getting far. After playing for the 100th time I finally got the hang of it. This and A Dark Room are 2 of the best games I have ever purchased from the App Store. I also love the fact that just like reading a book, you use your imagination for the images. Get it! You wont regret it!

Some bad moments

This is not a good game. It resets entirely every time you die. Right to very begining of the game! I dont have the patience for this! I loved a dark room, truly an inspired masterpiece. But The Ensign needs to fix its reward vs. punishment mechanic, because no matter how brilliant a dark room was, I doubt anyone, save a masochist, would enjoy this game.
I downloaded this after replaying A Dark Room and remember how entertaining that one was. I keep getting accosted by a defector with 200 health at the start of the game, sometimes before I get any equipment boosts or even weapons. I cant outrun them. Its not fun. I dont understand why this game has such high reviews.
Even when you learn what to do and what not, you go 5 times "straight" in hope of discovering anything, then you die of thirst. I dont see the point of a game where 50% of what you play are the first minutes because you die and lose everyrthing very often. Its not well balanced...
This game is buggy and needs work, a fair bit of it to say the least. It has frozen my phone a few times now. If I could give this app a .5 star rating I would. It has little rhyme or reason in the first 10 deaths you will experience...then it picks up stride and seems like youve made progress, comes across as interesting, and then you die again and start from scratch again. Not sure if it has save points or not, but after exploring a large area, sometimes it starts you back with absolutely nothing, and other times it shows a good chunk of what I explored, and remembers gear Ive found, albeit the wrong set. That said, if it does happen to revert to a "progress save point" it often forgets what equipment Ive found, will erases partial maps, slips backwards on the progress board and generally gives me the overwhelming feeling if chucking my phone. The game is boringly difficult in the early stages, until you are fairly lucky to catch a break and find rare equipment. Then it becomes a little easier, until you get attacked by a 200hp defector...in which case you die. And it will happen early when you have no chance if defeating him...not matter what. The developer believes hes being clever by building into the game taunting messages after you die...and often, as random as it seems, the devs also built in auto death moments where it doesnt matter what youve accomplished, you will die because its too early in the game to travel very far to find upgrades or food or the monster set is too much to overcome. Or even better, finding great gear only to die of dehydration because the devs forgot, or purposefully, to fill your water up when you hit a T, I, or an S. If the game had any kind of consistency...I might play it more...but as it is...its a phone chucking app at best, nothing more. OH! And by the way...The update will reset ANY progress youve made...youre starting over if you download the update. Terrifically well thought out, just brilliant! (Note sarcasm)
Not bad, not really anything new though. Dark Room was much better.
There are no words in the english language for how miserable a failure this game is. A Dark Room was a work of emotional art. This program does not even compare. There is no room for planning, no room for strategy. Immediately out of the gate, there is a fixed food supply, and outposts cannot be relooted to restore the supply. The starting hitpoints are insufficient to deal with the first assault the player is pressed into by a dwindling food supply, and there is not enough storage space to carry the knife, sword, and enough food to survive the engagement. The beginning of this game boils down to pure chance, and I find that to be contrary to everything ADR stood for. Furthermore, the overpowered defector with 200 HP and a Carbine can spawn at any moment to home in on you, and dispatch you, and you have no choice in the matter when it engages you. The more you die, the more taunting screens youre presented with, even to the point where youre told to just "give up like the rest." Really? This game is just garbage. Its a molestation of an aspect of ADR, and Amarali Rajan is essentially trying to push this garbage on the coattails of his ADR iOS port. Stay far away.
